We raise several heritage breed chickens. For true dual-purpose birds, we are currently raising Light Brahmas, Cuckoo Marans and Salmon Favorelles. All of which are dual purpose birds with fair-to-good egg production and excellent tasting meat. We also have Ameraucana's which lay blue-to-green-to-olive colored eggs. Ameraucana's are technically a dual-purpose meat and egg-laying bird but we raise them almost strictly for egg production. We recently got some Golden Laced Cochins, just to keep around for comic relief. Cochins look like chickens wearing bell bottoms. We'll post pictures as they get bigger! Our chickens are allowed to free range and we run them with our pigs and our goats. The chickens help keep insect populations down in the summer. |
